We have some great material supplied by the publishers to help promote some of the books we sell, and we are so happy to be able to share these with you to help encourage our children to engage in reading. With this in mind we have created our Bookish Themed Activity Days, featuring games, trails, colouring and some cheeky excerpts being read out in store to stimulate their imaginations.

First up is Thursday 28th May where we will be theming our day around The Magic Faraway Tree, with crafts and activities to engage their minds to the magical characters created by Enid Blyton. This will be happening all day, so drop by and join in the fun (includes a little treat for those taking part in the trail around the shop).

On Friday 29th we will be focusing on Tiny Hercules, which was previously our Children’s Indie Book Of The Month and has also been nominated for The Indie Book Awards 2026. There are pointers to create your own comic strip, characters plus paper crafts themed around Hercules and Greek myths.

These activity days are aimed for children of school age, and it is FREE to come and join in. The books are available to purchase or order on the day.

It’s the school holiday - well, a sort of mini-break for the kids anyway for a week…

Here at Bizy Lizy Books we understand just how hard it is to keep the kids amused when they are off school, so we have a few alternative offerings from the usual holiday clubs.

So, from Saturday 23rd we have some local authors visiting our shop. Each one will be in between 11am and 1pm, signing copies of their books, chatting about their inspiration and maybe some cheeky storytelling as well.

First to visit is Michelle Mounfield on Saturday 23rd May.

Michelle is the author of Max the T1 Superhero and his Gluco Mission. The book is aimed at younger readers, helping children and parents to understand coping with Type 1 Diabetes. The story is centred around young Max and his journey with Type 1 Diabetes.

Next up is Elaine, whose love of cats has inspired her to write Bobby the Police Cat and Cinders the Fire Cat. Elaine will be with us on Tuesday 26th May reading her stories in the traditional way as well as including BSL for Cinders the Fire Cat.

Our final author is Sharron Hunt who has written The Stirring Adventures of Jackson Fluffy Breeches: Little Rebel aimed at children 8 plus. Sharron is a frequent visitor to Bizy Lizy Books and her book has proved very popular with children at a local junior school.

One of the best things about running an independent bookshop is hearing what young readers really think about the books they read.

Children often notice things adults miss. They care about the characters, the adventure, the humour, and whether the story made them want to keep turning the pages.

So here at Bizy Lizy Books we’ve started a Young Readers Review Prize Draw.

If you know a child who enjoys reading, we’d love them to take part.

How it works

Young readers can pick up a review sheet in the shop, which includes some simple prompts to help them write their review. They can tell us:

• What book they read

• What they liked (or didn’t like)

• Their favourite character or moment

• A score out of 10

Once the review is finished, they simply pop it into the red review box in the shop.

The monthly prize

On the first day of every month, we randomly draw one review.

The winner receives a £10 National Book Tokens voucher, perfect for choosing their next read.

Even better, the winning review will also:

• Be printed in our monthly magazine

• Appear on our Recommended Children’s Books table in the shop

We hope this encourages young readers to think about the books they enjoy and share their recommendations with others.

After all, some of the best book recommendations come from other readers.

So if you know a young book lover, encourage them to write a review and take part. We can’t wait to see what they’ve been reading.
